Milind Khandekar at WMA delhi

New Delhi, November 16 – Another leading face of the Indian Media Industry joined World Media Academy delhi today to discuss the current state of journalism.

Milind Khandekar is Star News Managing Editor and one of the most influential members of India’s growing Broadcast Industry.

“Journalism changed drastically in the past 20 years,” said Khandekar to WMA delhi students. “Nowadays journalists have to be ‘one man armies’ able to write, shoot, edit, record, voice over and be on camera all on their own,” he continued.Khandekar flew from Mumbay at 8 am to meet WMA delhi students and discuss what means to be good journalists and how to get prepared to one of the most competitive Industries across the country.

Though he said is not a good speaker, he was able to catch students’ attention for more than 3 hours.

“First of all you cannot be ashamed to ask questions even if you feel they could be silly. Someone else could be interested in your question. Second to be a good journalist you need to have a curious mind and be interested in the subject you are covering. Finally I believe you should always write in the language you think in. This will allow you to express yourself better as a communicator”.

With over 17 year of experience in the News, Khandekar is aware of the ‘audience power’ in the Media Market and when a few students asked whether gossip or daily updates on a famous sitcom could be considered news, he said: “I like to compare today news to an Indian Thali, a selection of many different small dishes where you get a little bit of everything. Our audience is very diversified and each person out there has a different taste. Of course, you won’t have sugar or desserts as main course, but probably at the end of the meal you won’t be satisfied if you don’t get at least a bit of them.”

First Bill Keller from The New York Times, then Vivey Tewari from Cnn IBN, now Khandekar. Who will be next at WMA delhi?
